A tomar como mote a tese de Boime que identifica o Realismo arte oficial do Segundo Império, artigo reconstitui por sua própria conta os debates da época e examina na crítica pintura Chesneau Meissonier, também reivindicam realismo, em contraposição aos heterodoxos capitaneados Champfleury Courbet. O exame figuração artística à são feitos partir três dimensões: confronto entre autonomia engajamento; mercado as fortunas artísticas; individualismo artista problema anomia.
